Water, time, Venice and beauty

The excuse to talk about beauty is given by a man who fought with its origins, exiled from the country that gave him birth. We're talking about Joseph Brodsky, born in Leningrad (nowadays San Pietroburgo), had been accused of parasitism to society as poet and sentenced to hard labor, was forced by the Soviet authorities at the border crossing and settled in the United States in ' 72. In ' 87, he won the Nobel Prize for literature, when he gave an heartfelt speech on the relationship between aesthetics and ethics. This might be sufficient for those who had not already stumbled across some Brodskij's written for going to browse through the pages of literature that gave us. We include, for now, only a passage excerpted from the book Foundations of the Incurables, 1989, written and dedicated to Venice.
 

' Let me repeat: the water and time are the same thing and together provide beauty. We, partly made of water, we serve the beauty in the same way. Touching the water, this city improves the appearance of time, beautifies the future. Here is the function of this city in the universe '.
 

 

In this essential poetry, beauty is not merely assocciated of two elements: the water and the time. Time, one of the main problems of many disciplines, from literature to cinema, physics and  especially in philosophy, in this case we are interested only in his being in relation to beauty. We think of the time as a value can enhance the beauty of an experience, as the time that elapses between intering a plant seeds and flowering or when a teacher takes the fruits of his work in student after having devoted so much time. The beauty may not be obvious, sometimes it takes time and it is important to give it the right time to unfold, to manifest. Although we make uniform time measuring it in seconds, minutes and hours, we know that the time of consciousness is another thing, my time may be different from that of those who are near in a shared experience and may be different from that of things. How it can be expanded, for example, the time of an old tree. Also the beauty has its own time, each time different, and to favor him or her, to harmonize with, it does take in its fullness. The rhythmic gait of waves is the time of water. Noble and precious element, the origin of life and civilization, a symbol of purity, worshipped to be deified in many cultures; the most beautiful description of the qualities from Giangiorgio Pasqualotto, enlightened scholar of philosophy, Professor of Aesthetics at the University of Padua, speaking of the importance that it has in Eastern religions:
 

.. it is weak and elastic, because it is formless and adapts to any shape, but is also strong because it succeeds in producing decided pressures and incisive corrosion, then, for its intrinsic nature, comes down and is down, so how should do the wise that is humble and does not pretend to control ' (Japanese, Editrice Universitaria Notebook Udinese, 2008).
 

Water, in addition to being the bearer of life, becomes a role model. It teaches us to live wisely, to be humble but determined and incisive, imitating his strength and his temperance and teaches also the importance of being flexible, able to understand and adapt to the environments and people without invading.

Although Brodksij not referred to this in his verses, we liked quote him as a source of these reflections. The fact remains that water and the deposit of incredible wonders of art and architecture that only time granted, make Venice one of the most beautiful cities in the world, maybe the most beautiful.

Acqua, tempo, Venezia e bellezza.

Il pretesto per parlare di bellezza ce lo regala di nuovo un uomo che ha dovuto scontrarsi con le sue origini, esiliato dal paese che gli ha dato i natali. Parliamo di Josif Brodskij, nato nell' allora Leningrado, era stato accusato di parassitismo nei confronti della società in quanto poeta e condannato ai lavori forzati, fu poi costretto dalle autorità sovietiche all’espatrio e si stabilì negli Stati Uniti nel ’72. Nel ’87 vinse il Premio Nobel per la letteratura, che ritirò con un accorato discorso sul rapporto tra estetica ed etica. Questo potrebbe essere sufficiente per chi non si fosse già imbattuto in qualche suo scritto per andare a curiosare tra le pagine di letteratura che ci ha regalato. Citiamo, per ora, solo un passaggio tratto dal libro Fondamenta degli incurabili del 1989, scritto e dedicato alla da lui amata, tanto da volervi essere sepolto, Venezia.

 

' Lasciatemelo ripetere: l’acqua e il tempo sono la stessa cosa e insieme provvedono alla bellezza. Noi, in parte fatti d’acqua, serviamo la bellezza nello stesso modo. Toccando l’acqua, questa città migliora l’aspetto del tempo, abbellisce il futuro. Ecco la funzione di questa città nell’universo'.

 

Nella sua essenziale poesia, questo passaggio assoccia, non banalmente, alla bellezza due elementi: l’acqua ed il tempo. Il tempo, uno dei problemi principali di molte discipline, dalla letteratura alla fisica al cinema ma forse soprattutto nella filosofia, in questo caso ci interessa limitatamente al suo essere in rapporto alla bellezza. Pensiamo al tempo come un valore in grado di accrescere la bellezza di un’ esperienza, come il tempo che trascorre tra quando si interrano i semi di una pianta e quando la si vede fiorire o quando un maestro coglie i frutti del suo lavoro nell’allievo dopo avergli dedicato tanto tempo. La bellezza può non essere evidente, a volte va cercata, a volte ci vuole tempo ed e’ importante darle il giusto tempo per dispiegarsi, per manifestarsi. Anche se appiattiamo il tempo misurandolo in secondi, minuti e ore, sappiamo bene che il tempo della coscienza è un’altra cosa, il mio tempo può essere diverso da quello di chi mi sta vicino anche in un’ esperienza condivisa e può essere diverso anche da quello delle cose. Come può essere dilatato, ad esempio, il tempo di un vecchio albero. Anche la bellezza ha il suo tempo, ogni volta diverso, e riuscire a ad assecondarlo, ad armonizzarsi con esso, ce la fa cogliere nella sua pienezza. L’incedere ritmico delle onde è il tempo dell’acqua. Elemento nobile e prezioso, origine della vita e delle civiltà, simbolo di purezza, adorata fino ad essere divinizzata in molte culture; la descrizione più bella delle sue qualità ce la da Giangiorgio Pasqualotto, illuminato studioso di filosofia, docente di Estetica all’Università di Padova, parlando dell’importanza che essa ha nelle religioni orientali:

 

‘…essa è debole ed elastica, perché è senza forma e si adatta a qualsiasi forma, ma è nel contempo forte perché riesce a produrre pressioni decise e corrosioni incisive; essa, poi, per sua intrinseca natura, scende e sta in basso, così come dovrebbe fare il saggio che non si mette in mostra e non pretende di comandare’ (Taccuino Giapponese, Editrice Universitaria Udinese, 2008).

 

L’acqua, oltre ad essere portatrice di vita, diventa esempio di vita e di comportamento. Ci insegna a vivere in modo saggio, ad essere umili ma decisi e incisivi, imitando la sua forza e la sua temperanza e ci insegna l’importanza di essere elastici, capaci di comprendere e di adattarsi agli ambienti e alle persone senza invaderli. Anche se Brodksij non si riferiva a questo nei suoi versi, ci è piaciuto citarlo come fonte di queste riflessioni. Resta il fatto che l’acqua, con l’insinuarsi dei canali nella città, il suo incombere sulle fondamenta e lo stratificarsi di incredibili meraviglie di arte e di architettura che solo il tempo ha concesso, fanno di Venezia una della città più belle al mondo, se non la più bella.
